In the 1870's cattle herds were driven north overland to middle America.
With the introduction of the railroad, national meat packing firm owned by
Swift and Armour processed meat for shipping to northern markets by rail.
Following World War II, the trucking industry provided a cheaper and faster
way to ship beef.
The Stockyards Exchange continue to host
weekly live auctions to buy and sell beef. The Cowtown Coliseum was
constructed in 1908 for the Southwestern Exposition and Stock Show and
hosts weekend indoor Rodeos. Major annual events are Chisholm Trail
Round-Up (June) and Pioneer Days (August).
This area has many fine restaurants,
dance halls, saloons, art galleries and business offices. In 1976 this
area of Fort Worth was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
