Find a short fence.

Place a broom handle stick at the far end and a short stick in front of the camera.

With the Canon 10-22 at 10mm the bottom of the image frame is 50" away from the tripod center. See also setup and panorama view below

Looking through the view finder to align both far and near objects..

Center both objects

Adjust your camera forward and backward until the center of front object does not move away from the distant object.

Be sure to mark or index the pan head and the camera bottom.

Here you see the center of tripod rotation is directly below the lens gold ring.
The center of the lens must be directly (left to right) over the top of the tripod center point. 

In this case the Canon lens center point is 40mm to the inside face of the vertical bracket. (right mouse click on the image and save it to your hard drive and zoom in to see the measurement.
